Start with two photos.

For an EV charger, your switchboard and the wall you want the charger on tell me almost everything: spare capacity, phase, cable run. Send them through and I will come back with a price and a charger recommendation.

DarkCharge · EV charging

EV charging, from the switchboard out.

A charger is only as good as the circuit behind it. Every install starts at the board, so the charger, the solar and the rest of the house all get along.

Charger installation

02

Switchboard first

The board is checked for capacity before anything is quoted. If it needs a new circuit, more protection or a full upgrade, that is done as part of the job.

03

Solar prioritisation

Chargers that watch what the panels are exporting and charge the car from the excess before it goes to the grid. Evnex Core E2 and both Zappis do this.

04

Dynamic load balancing

A sensor reads the whole house. When the oven, air con and pool pump are all on, the charger winds back, then ramps up again. No tripped mains, no bigger connection.

Which charger

Five chargers. Here is how to pick.

I install Tesla, Evnex and Myenergi Zappi. They overlap, so start with your house rather than the brand: solar or not, single or three phase, and how hard your supply already works.

Switchboard upgrades

Same board, before and after.

A real board from a recent job. This is what an upgrade looks like, and why an EV charger or a new air con sometimes has to start here.

  • Before: ceramic fuses next to a mix of old breakers, two safety switches covering several circuits between them, handwritten labels.
  • After: a new Clipsal board with a safety switch and breaker in one (an RCBO) on every circuit, printed labels, and the solar and shed sub-board on their own switches.
  • Every circuit protected on its own, so one fault trips one thing, not the whole house.

After
Domestic electrical

The everyday work around the house.

Chargers are the specialty. The rest of the house is a big part of the week too, done neat, tested and to AS/NZS 3000.

Switchboard upgrades

Old fuses out, safety switches on every circuit in. Room for solar, a charger and whatever comes next.

New circuits and power points

Dedicated circuits for ovens, air con, sheds and workshops. Extra power points, moved or upgraded, USB included.

Lighting and LED downlights

Halogens swapped for LEDs, feature and pendant lighting added, and outdoor or sensor lights so the yard is usable at night.

Ceiling fans

Indoor and alfresco fans installed and wired to a wall control or remote.

Fault-finding

Tripping breakers, dead power points, flickering lights. Tracked down and fixed, not just reset.

Safety switches and smoke alarms

RCDs fitted so every circuit is protected, and smoke alarms installed or replaced to WA rules.

Rental and pre-purchase checks

An electrical once-over for landlords, property managers and buyers before they commit.

Also available: small commercial and strata work such as emergency lighting checks, RCD testing and test and tag. Ask if you have something not on the list.

How it works

Four steps, no surprises.

  • 1
    Enquire

Text two photos (switchboard and charger location) or use the form. For other jobs, a photo and a short description.

  • 2
    Quote

A price and, for a charger, a recommendation on which one. If it needs a look in person first, I say so before anything starts.

  • 3
    Install

Booked in at a time that suits. Dedicated circuit, isolator, tidy conduit, any board work included in the quote.

  • 4
    Test and handover

The charger is tested with a proper EV test adapter, the app or display is set up with you, and you get the compliance paperwork.

Perth's northern suburbs.

Based in the northern suburbs and happiest working the coastal strip and the suburbs behind it. Close by means less travel and more of the day on your job.

Questions

Things people ask before they book.

How much does a home EV charger install cost?

It depends on three things: the cable run from your switchboard to where the car parks, the state of the switchboard, and the charger you choose. A short run to a board with spare capacity is the cheap end. A long run through the roof or an older board that needs work is the dear end. Send a photo of your switchboard with the cover open and a photo of where you want the charger and I can usually price it from those.

Do I need three phase power for an EV charger?

No. Most Perth homes are single phase and a single phase charger charges a typical EV overnight with ease. Three phase only matters if your house already has it and you want the faster rate. The Tesla Wall Connector and the Zappi V2.1 come in single and three phase versions. The Evnex Flex E2, Evnex Core E2 and Zappi GLO are single phase only.

Will an EV charger overload my house supply?

Not with dynamic load balancing. The charger watches what the rest of the house is drawing and winds itself back when the oven, air con and pool pump are all running, then ramps up again. The Evnex Flex E2, Evnex Core E2, Zappi V2.1 and Zappi GLO all do this. It is the answer for older homes on a smaller mains supply.

Can I charge my EV from my solar?

Yes, with a charger that has solar prioritisation. The Evnex Core E2, Zappi V2.1 and Zappi GLO all watch what your panels are exporting and charge the car from that excess instead of sending it to the grid for very little. It pays off when the car is home during the day. If the car is at work every weekday, the Flex E2 is the better buy.

Which EV charger should I get?

If you have solar and the car is home in the day: Evnex Core E2 or a Zappi. If your house is three phase: Tesla Wall Connector or Zappi V2.1. If your supply is already working hard and you have no solar: Evnex Flex E2. If there is a Tesla in the garage and you want the simple proven option: Tesla Wall Connector. If you want the premium brand in a compact, more affordable unit: Zappi GLO.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade before an EV charger?

Sometimes. A charger needs its own dedicated circuit with its own safety switch, and the board needs the capacity to take it. Newer boards usually do. Older boards with ceramic fuses or no spare ways often need work first. Your switchboard photo tells me which, before anything is quoted.

How long does an EV charger install take?

A straightforward install is usually done in a day. Your install gets proper time rather than a rushed slot, and the charger is tested with a proper EV test adapter before handover.

Do you only do EV chargers?

No. EV chargers are the specialty, but the everyday electrical work is a big part of what I do: switchboard upgrades, new circuits and power points, LED downlights, ceiling fans, fault-finding, safety switches and smoke alarms. If it is not on the list, ask.

Which suburbs do you cover?

Perth's northern suburbs, mostly the coastal strip and the suburbs behind it: Duncraig, Carine, Sorrento, Padbury, Balcatta, Hillarys, Marmion, Karrinyup, Warwick, Greenwood, Kingsley, Woodvale, Joondalup and the suburbs in between. Anything close is usually fine. South of the river generally is not.

When can I reach you?

Seven days, by appointment. If I do not pick up, leave a message or send a text and I will call you back.
